If you look exactly behind the house, almost exactly in line with the approach avenue, you will see a little notation of "graveyard." (Click on the map to enlarge it.) This is a slave cemetery. Julia Britton says she remembers her grandmother Rebecca ("Beck"), daughter of George, telling her that she would sometimes hear the African Americans coming up the avenue, moaning, carrying a casket and she would put on her bonnet and go open the gate to the graveyard for them. There was at least one headstone there, for Tony, the head slave who met Sherman's troops at the avenue gate. Jay Fincher is going this Saturday to see if anything is visible. Problem is, the developer is doing work right there, including cutting and clearing trees. |
